Tuesday {Ten} Baby Edition

I decided a Tuesday Ten Baby Edition was in order since I haven't written a Tuesday Ten in a while and many people have asked me about baby items, both for themselves (some have asked me directly, some have published blanket questions to anyone that will answer) and as gifts (these have been direct questions) since Joseph joined our family.  Since we were unwilling to buy too many baby items before Joseph arrived, I relied heavily on friend recommendations and appreciated them helping us out (true story - I had a minor freak out as we were driving to the hospital for a false alarm during which I kept saying, "We don't even have a car seat!"  Sam assured me that he would buy a car seat for us before Joseph was ready to leave the hospital.  Since it was just a false alarm, we bought one on the way home the next day.).  So, without further ado, here is my list of top ten baby items.  Some are common "duh" items, some aren't, but all of them have been used and loved by our little family.

1.} Moby Wrap ~ Yes, I am a baby wearer.  When Joseph was little, he was in the Moby wrap all. the. time.  It gave us bonding time that I hadn't been able to have the last nine months and allowed him to feel comforted while I had my hands free to do stuff.  I still use the Moby when grocery shopping and such.  One big perk of the Moby is that strangers touch him less than they do when he's in his car seat.  At first the Moby seems a little intimidating, but after you watch the online video a couple of times, you will be a pro.  It also grows with your child by offering different wraps/holds as the child reaches various weights and developmental milestones.
This is 3 week old J in the Moby while I got my thrift on trying to get stuff for his nursery (I promise I will post about it someday).

2.} Muslin Blankets ~ As far as swaddling blankets go, muslin or gauze is the way to go!  They allow you to get an awesomely tight swaddle (even if you don't know what you're doing).  Also, since they are a light weight material, you don't have to worry about the blanket adding too much extra warmth, just dress the baby in appropriate clothes (this is extra helpful in the summertime).  We used the Aden and Anais brand (I know they are available at Target and boutique stores), but I'm sure other brands would work fine too.

3.} Car Seat Caddy ~ Since we bought the car seat spur of the moment, we didn't bother getting the entire travel system at the time.  I'm so glad we didn't because we talked to some friends and did a little research and decided to just go with the caddy (some brands call it a snap and go system).  I love our caddy!  It's small enough that it easily fits in the back of my Forrester and light enough that I can easily get it out and put it back in the vehicle.  I even ran with it the other night (long story short, a spontaneous out of town run with friends turned out to be an awesome night) and was impressed with how well it did.

4.} Dirty Diaper Bags ~ Dirty diaper bags are a must, especially when you have a little one that poops as much as our guy.  I use them often including when we are on car trips and will have to carry the diaper with us for a little way and when we are visiting people (because really, who wants to smell dirty diaper every time they open their trash can.).  They even come with this handy little dispenser that clips onto your diaper bag and are lightly scented.

5.} Mesh Bumper ~ Our little guy moves a lot in his sleep.  As in, when I go get him from his crib he has ofter spun 180* and is pushed up against the side.
Luckily, he started doing this while he was still sleeping in the pack and play so we were able to do a little crib bumper research before we moved him to the crib.  I knew that we wouldn't be leaving the plush bumper in there, but I was worried about him getting an arm or leg stuck through the slats.  We found the perfect solution for us in a mesh crib bumper.  I know, I know, technically you aren't supposed to use a bumper of any sort, but I assure you my husband and I both pressed the mesh to our faces and had no problem breathing through it.  At this point, I am more concerned with him breaking one of his little limbs.

6.} Mabel's Labels ~ So these totally aren't a necessity, but I still love having them.  Even though he doesn't go to day care, it's nice having Joseph's name on his belongings when I drop him off at the nursery.  The labels on his bottles have already been through multiple steam sterilizations and still look brand new.  I actually got a back to school value pack, but haven't used any of the clothing or shoe tags yet.  I'll let you know how those work out when the time comes.  Since I bought a discount certificate through Mamasource (a deal a day site for moms), they were very reasonable priced (just be forewarned that Mabel's Labels is a Canadian company, so you might get a call from your bank asking about an out of country purchase :).

7.} Backpack Carrier ~ One of my husband's only requests was a sturdy backpack carrier.  We went with the Chicco version and both my husband and Joseph love it.  In my opinion, the best part about this carrier is that my husband is willing to wear it.

8.} Car Mirror ~ A car mirror is such a simple thing, but I didn't think about it until I finally started driving with Joseph in the car and wanted to be able to check on him (more often than not, he's giving me his mad face in the mirror).

9.} Dreft Stain Remover ~ The mom of one of my students last year introduced me to this amazing item.  It works wonders on those stains little ones are known for making.  Now that Joseph drools all the time, I seriously spray the neckline of all of his onesies as I put them in the washer.  In case you are wondering, the Dreft stain remover is located in the baby section, not with the laundry products.

10.}  Pack and Play ~ This is a fairly common item, but I'm still including it because we use it a lot.  Joseph slept in it for the first three months and still uses it at least a couple times each month as we tend to travel a lot.  It's very easy to put together and pack up, provides a comfort zone for him since he is familiar with it, and solves the problem of us having to figure out where he will sleep while we are traveling.  We got one with a newborn sleeper level which was very convenient when I was getting him out multiple times per night at first.  Our pack and play also had this cool little attachment that would vibrate it, such a lifesaver.

And there you have it, my top ten baby items.  I also love our Go-Pod, but don't feel that we've used it enough to include on this list.  Oh, and our swing.  I don't know what we would have done without our swing those first few weeks.  J still naps in it daily.  What are your favorite baby items?

Tuesday {Ten} Random Pictures From My Phone

I have a bunch of random pictures on my phone, so I decided to share some of them with you today for my Tuesday Ten.

1.}  I had to make a couple of these creepy cute cats after I saw them over at This Mama Makes Stuff.  I loved them so much I made them the next day!  They are ceramic cats (from the thrift store) spray painted black with red glitter glue eyes.  The best part is that for less than $4 I have two new Halloween decorations!

2.}  When I was at the thrift store looking for ceramic cats, I scored this whole pile of awesomeness for $2!

3.}  This is proof that my mother-in-law loves me.  Last time we went up there, she had peanut butter pie waiting on me!

4.}  We made ricotta cheese the other day.  While it didn't taste bad, I think we will leave the cheese making to the experts.

5.}  A little while back, Sam had to go on a business trip.  While he was there, I texted this picture to show him what he was missing out on at home.  Yes, I was on Pinterest while watching Project Runway.

6.}  When my grandma got a new vehicle, she asked the dealership to move her front license plate over for her.  Can you believe that they put it upside down!  To the person who did this, I realize that you are probably an OU fan, but the man buying this vehicle as well as his son and three of his grandkids actually went to school at OSU.  Have you ever even been to the OU campus for something other than a football game?  That being said, the funny thing about this picture is that my grandma drove around like this for a couple of weeks before I noticed and pointed it out to her.

7.}  Ben, my brother-in-law, gave me this card the other day.  How often do you see a Boston Terrier and Great Dane together on something?

8.}  I'm sorry about the quality of this picture, but I had to include it.  While I was sewing the other day, I looked up to see Rufus laying on Bella.  I snapped a quick picture with my phone before getting up to go grab the other camera.  As suspected, Rufus promptly jumped up and followed me.

9.}  This was Bella's face when we pulled up at the camp grounds the other night.  If that's not a happy dog face, I don't know what is!

10.}  And lastly, we'll do anything for a laugh around here.  Every time Sam would nod his head to make the lamb move, both dogs would start barking.  It was entertaining to say the least.

There you have it, this week's Tuesday Ten.  I hope you enjoyed looking at my random pictures!

Tuesday {Ten} Halloween Candy

For this weeks Tuesday Ten, I've decided to do a round up of the best candies for Halloween.  Some you might agree with, some you might question, and you might feel like I left some off (my husband doesn't understand how I don't like Kit Kats).

1.}  Sixlets ~ These are my all time favorite Halloween candy!  The only problem with sixlets is that they are hard to find throughout the rest of the year.

2.}  Reese's Pumpkins ~ Actually, I love all of the Reese's shapes (eggs are the best!) because the peanut butter to chocolate ratio is better than normal Reese's.

3.}  Reese's Peanut Butter Cups ~ Yes, I am listing these separate from Reese's shapes.  They have peanut butter and chocolate, does it get any better than that?!

4.}  Snicker's ~  I don't think this one needs an explanation, it's hard to beat a Snicker's.

5.}  Twix ~ Cookie, caramel, and chocolate... perfect for when you want a little crunch.

6.}  Candy Corn ~ I know some people will disagree with this one, but I love candy corn (especially the pumpkins) and the fact that it is only available for a short time each year.

7.}  Peanut M&M's ~  I have a confession to make.  In college, when I stayed up too late studying and had a test to take, peanut M&M's were my go to vending machine snack.  I figured they had sugar in the chocolate and protein in the peanuts.  That's a good reason to eat them, right?

8.}  Tootsie Rolls ~ This is another one that I'm sure many people will disagree with, but I love them.  I also like the flavored tootsie rolls you sometimes get around Halloween (orange is the best!).

9.}  Laffy Taffy ~ I know, I'm crazy for putting something that's not chocolate on this list, but sometimes you just want something fruity.  I like all of the flavors except banana (that's my husband's least favorite too).

10.}  Milk Duds ~ Chocolate covered caramel, mmmmm!

There you have it, my top ten Halloween candies.  Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite candy, maybe you are thinking of one that I missed.

Tuesday {Ten} Orange Edition

Since we began college football season last week, I decided to do an orange edition of Tuesday Ten.  For those of you who don't know, I went to college at Oklahoma State University.  Our school colors are orange and black which worked out for me because I've always loved orange.  These are just a few of the things I have around the house and I plan on adding more (I'm thinking the kids need an orange dresser in their orange and blue room).  In no particular order, here it goes:

1.}  This little guy's name is Orville.  Although my husband disagrees, I think garden gnomes are cute.  One year Sam surprised me with Orville for Christmas and he's greeted our guests every since.  He's pretty faded, but spending all day every day in the sun can do that to you.  (There is a girl version of Orville, but so far I've been unsuccessful in convincing Sam he needs a girlfriend.)

2.}  Thanks to her Aunt Moo who ordered it as soon as we found out we were having a girl, Aubrey's first bow was orange.  It's one of the things that resides in her box now.

3.}  When I graduated from high school (10 years ago!), I received an orange blanket as a gift.  I still use that blanket daily.  Rufus loves this blanket because he knows that he's likely to get invited to sit on my lap when I'm using it (I'm a mean dog momma and only let the dogs on the furniture when they're invited up :).

4.}  Orange Tom's, enough said.

5.}  My bestie makes awesome feathered headbands.  She's given me a few, but my favorite is this orange and black one.

6.}  One day I went to my grandma's house for lunch.  She was serving mashed potatoes in an orange Fiesta bowl (one she's had for a LONG time).  I told her I liked the color of the bowl and that I wished Fiesta still made stuff in that color (their new orange is more of a tangerine color).  When we were leaving she handed me the bowl and told me to enjoy.

7.}  I conquered my fear of dyeing clothes when I colored these onesies (that I then freezer paper stenciled).

8.}  Last year my sweet husband went with me to a craft show where he bought me an orange scarf (if that's not true love, I don't know what is :).

9.}  Back when we were in college, before we got married, my husband bought me a water bottle.  It was super sweet because he was just walking across campus, saw some people selling them, and decided to buy me one (even though they cost $10 which he thought was a lot).  I love this bottle and still use it.

10.}  In true school spirit fashion, I painted my toenails orange.  I didn't think much about it (I do still live in Stillwater) until I went to the fertility specialist last week.  They are located at the other university in Oklahoma and the doctor who was covering that day's patients made a comment about my toes (my normal doctor got his undergrad at OSU, so he would have approved).  (Please ignore the awesome tan lines I got when we floated the river last weekend :)

Tuesday {Ten} Things I'm Loving Right Now

For today's Tuesday Ten, I decided to share some things I'm loving right now.

1.}  Lemi-Shine Dishwasher Additive ~ If you don't get anything else from this post, try this stuff, it is amazing!  A couple of months ago I was getting frustrated with the amount of residue left on my dishes.  I saw this stuff on a blog and decided to give it a try (at a little over $3 it seemed like a reasonable risk).  As instructed, I first ran the dishwasher with nothing but Lemi-Shine in it.  Now, I'm beyond ecstatic with how my dishes look.  I don't follow the directions completely, I only put a couple of teaspoons in with my normal dishwashing soap (less than they recommend), but the results are still amazing.

2.}  Chosen Necklace ~ As soon as I saw this necklace featured on I Am Momma - Hear Me Roar, I knew that I would be purchasing one for any little girls we might get through the adoption process.  They are available at a website called Cap Creations and $10 from every necklace is donated to help families with adoption expenses.  What a great symbol that they were chosen by God to be a part of our family!

3.}  Joint Anniversary Gifts ~ This year, Sam and I decided to get a joint anniversary gift.  We've been wanting to get a nice camera for when we get the kids for a while now and I'm psyched we did!  Here are a couple of pictures Sam took with it this weekend (both of which are straight out of the camera).

4.}  Canvas People ~ I came across their website this spring and quickly ordered an 11x14 canvas with a picture from our Christmas card photo shoot.  When I ordered my canvas, they were running a $50 off special allowing me to only pay about $17 for my canvas and shipping.  What I learned is that this sale wasn't a one time thing, they are often having half price or $50 off sales.  I'm itching to order a couple more, but I'm making myself wait until we get the kids.

5.}  Vidalia Onion Vinegarette Salad Dressing ~ This stuff is mmm, mmm good!  Although it is great on salads, I especially love it as a dip for chicken strips.

6.}  Snicker's Ice Cream Bars ~  Mmmmm, we've eaten way too many of these this summer.

7.} Knit Dresses ~  I love how cool they are on hot summer days.

8.} Gotebo Get Down T-Shirts ~ Every year my grandma gets every one in the family a Gotebo Get Down shirt.  I love that they are normally slightly corny (hey, you know me).  In case you are wondering, Gotebo is a small town here in Oklahoma.  Here are the fronts and backs of some of my favorite shirts from years past (yes, I still wear the 2005 shirt often, I love it that much).  The one on the right is this year's shirt that she gave me this weekend.

9.} My Grandma's Miniature Beyonce ~ I can't describe how excited I was to pull up at my grandparent's house and see a little Beyonce in her front yard.  I mean, I was so excited that I jumped out of the car and begged asked my husband to take a picture of me with it so I could immediately text it to Kim!

10.} Aubrey's Birthday Gift ~ Number ten is a little bit of a tease.  Aubrey's birthday gift came in last week even though we paid for it a month before her birthday (in May).  I'm planning a whole post about how we celebrate Aubrey's special days, so stay tuned.
